The challenge of the century will be to decarbonize the economy by both reducing outgoing emissions and removing legacy emissions from our atmosphere. Central to this effort is the ability to measure our progress.
As the largest carbon sink on earth, the ocean has immense potential to remove excess carbon from the atmosphere. Measuring carbon removal in the ocean has an added layer of complexity because it is a two step process. First, carbon is removed by enhanced chemical, biological, or physical reactions reducing the partial pressure of CO2 in the water. The atmosphere's comparatively high pressure induces CO2 uptake by the ocean to reestablish equilibrium. This rebalancing can happen over the span of a year, all while the CO2 depleted water is moving, mixing, and sinking making it difficult to track and measure.
The Opportunity
Our mission is to overcome this challenge and accelerate the implementation of ocean carbon dioxide removal (CDR) by making resources available for measurement and verification (MRV). Now more than ever, investment in the blue economy is driving new research, policies, innovation, and technology. In fact, estimates published by OECD suggest the blue economy could double in size from USD 1.5 trillion in global value added in 2010 to USD 3 trillion in 2030.
