GO-SHIP A16N

Lessons from the field: measuring pH in the north Atlantic onboard GO-SHIP.

In April of 2023, Laura embarked on NOAA's Ronald H. Brown to cross the North Atlantic collecting seawater data. She joined Leg 2 of the A16N route starting in Rota, Spain and arriving a month later in Reykjavik, Iceland. Onboard, she served as a tech, gathering, measuring, and reporting seawater pH data. This work required deep knowledge of carbonate chemistry, instrumentation, and sample collection technique as well as excellent time management and ability to adapt to the challenges at sea. This data contributes to the CLIVAR and Carbon Hydrographic Dataset to help calibrate global models and track trends in global ocean changes.
